This week on Nós Portugueses, Carlos Oliveira shows you how to make a tarte pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart).
Ingredients:
One package of puff pastry
8 egg yolks
Peel from 1 lemon
Half a litre of heavy cream
175 grams of sugar
2 teaspoons of flour
1 or 2 cinnamon sticks
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 450F or 230C.
Line a pie pan with the pastry, press it all around the pan, cut out any access pastry that sticks out above the rim and put the pan aside.
In pan, add the yolks and beat a bit, then add the sugar and flour and beat a little more, then add the cream, lemon peel and cinnamon sticks and stir well.
Heat on stovetop over medium low heat while continuing to stir with a whisk and remove from the heat when it comes to a boil.
Remove the lemon peel and cinnamon sticks and pour the custard into the pie pan.
