The Algarve Region of Southern Portugal

The Algarve Region of Southern Portugal

Within Portugal's south-western border lies the Algarve region, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

Miles of clean beaches with clear blue waters and rugged hills serve as a stunning backdrop to a variety of activities such as golfing, surfing, hiking, climbing, biking, swimming, and more, all of which can be enjoyed here.

Although the Algarve is home to a plethora of luxurious hotels, golf courses, resorts, and condominium buildings, there are also some hidden coves and quiet beaches to be found if one knows where to look.

The international airport in Faro, the region's capital, serves a large proportion of the 9 million tourists who visit the Algarve region each year, with the majority arriving through the airport. Tourism will also generate an estimated 12 billion euros in revenue in 2010, which may give you an idea of the size of the tourist industry in the surrounding area. The Algarve has been popular with European tourists, particularly British tourists, for many years and has continued to grow, sometimes to the point of being considered overdeveloped in the eyes of some.

That is one of the reasons why visiting during the winter months is a good idea. The weather is mild enough to be pleasant for the majority of the season, and the hotels and resorts are offering rooms and suites at significant discounts to take advantage of the low season. It is possible to find rooms at prices that are significantly lower than those charged during the peak season, and it is much easier to find a spot on the beach or make reservations at popular restaurants during this time. When the off-season arrives, the golf courses are less crowded, and it's easier to get a feel for the real Portugal than during the peak season.

For those seeking even greater seclusion, renting a car is recommended; a national forest is located just one and a half hours' drive west of Faro and provides access to a variety of hiking trails. Situated on the southwestern tip of the country, the village of Sagres has seen little development in terms of tourism because it is surrounded by national forest. A great place to soak up some authentic Portuguese atmosphere, there are empty beaches nearby, as well as the lighthouse and fortress of San Vicente, which are both worth a trip on their own.

The Vilamoura Hilton Resort Portugal is offering winter discounts, with rates starting at 120 euros per night for standard room accommodations.
