A Portuguese prego sandwich is a variation of the Prego sandwich that originates from Portugal. It typically consists of a juicy, tender steak or beef fillet that has been marinated in a blend of garlic, olive oil, and spices, then grilled to perfection. The steak is then placed on a Portuguese roll or crusty bread and topped with a spicy sauce made with garlic, chili peppers, and vinegar, along with caramelized onions.

In Portugal, the prego sandwich is a popular snack or lunch item that is often served in cafes, bars, and street-side kiosks. It is also a popular sandwich in other Portuguese-speaking countries like Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique, where it may be prepared with local variations or ingredients.

Directions

  1. Lay out the steaks on a cutting board or other flat surface.
  2. Lay slices of garlic on on side of the steaks.
  3. Using a tenderizing mallet, “nail” the garlic to the steak by pounding the slices into the meat.
  4. Repeat on the reverse side of the steaks.
  5. Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry each steak in the butter for barely two to three minutes, turning once.
  7. Transfer to a dish and cover.
  8. Melt the rest of the butter in the same skillet.
  9. Add the onions and saute until they are golden.
  10. Return the beef to the onions and sauce and heat through for about 30 seconds.
  11. Serve on the toasted sandwich rolls, enjoy!

What's the coarse salt for? To sprinkle on the sandwich? Just curious because I can't have salt if that's the reason it works for me! ☺ It doesn't specify on the recipe! BTW great job with the recipes Maria & Joe! Thank you for posting and making me hungry! Lol

Eddy
You can just leave the salt out Karen, thank you.
