Portuguese Drunk Pears (Peras Bebedas) Recipe

Portuguese drunk pears (peras bebedas) are cooked in a syrup with sugar, spices and in this case, port wine. The combination is perfect and the result is a visually appealing dessert.

Ingredients

3/4 cup of sugar1 and 3/4 cups of Red wine1 lemon peel1 cinnamon stick1 star anise6 small rock pears1/4 cup of Port wine

Get Portuguese ingredients Get Portuguese ingredients and other stuff from Amazon.com

Directions

  1. Place the sugar, red wine, lemon peel, cinnamon stick and star anise in a small saucepan.
  2. Peel the pears leaving only the stalk and place them in the pan.
  3. Bring to a boil and simmer gently for about 30 minutes or until tender.
  4. Turn the pears from time to time.
  5. Remove the pears to a bowl and set aside.
  6. Add the Port wine to the syrup and let it boil until it reduces and starts to thicken.
  7. Remove the lemon peel, cinnamon stick and anise star and pour the syrup over the pears and let it cool.
