Ingredients

1/2 Lb (230g) of dried figs1/2 Lb (230g) of ground almonds2 oz (60g) of cocoa powder1 teaspoon of cinnamongrated rind of 1 lemon1/2 Lb (230g) of granulated sugar4 oz (120 ml) of water

Get Portuguese ingredients

Instructions

  1. Mince the figs finely or put them through a food processor.
  2. Add the remaining dry ingredients, except for the sugar, in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add sugar and water to a saucepan.
  4. Bring to a boil, and stir until the sugar is dissolved, then boil without stirring for about 2 minutes, until it is thick and slightly reduced.
  5. Remove from the heat and add the figs, and the mixed ingredients from the bowl while beating.
  6. The mixture will be very stiff.
  7. Bring back to the heat and cook on low until it peels away from the sides and the bottom of the pan.
  8. Put it into an 8 inch (20 cm) pan or shallow dish.
  9. Let it cool, and then cut small squares and sprinkle with sugar.
