Madeiran poncha is a traditional alcoholic drink from the island of Madeira, which is part of Portugal. It is made with aguardente de cana, which is a type of distilled sugarcane juice, mixed with honey and freshly squeezed lemon juice. The drink is usually served in a small glass, and it is often garnished with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint.

The poncha is a popular drink in Madeira and is typically enjoyed in social settings, such as at a local bar or during a festival. It has a strong, sweet, and sour flavor, and it is known for its warming and comforting qualities. The drink is also said to have medicinal properties and is believed to help relieve sore throats and other common ailments.

In recent years, the Madeiran poncha has gained popularity outside of Madeira and can now be found in some bars and restaurants in other parts of Portugal and Europe.

Sounds good - will try this weekend. Thanks for the great posts Eddy! Here's one back at you - it's a riff on a Manhattan, substituting Full Rich Madeira wine (Justino's if available) in place of sweet vermouth. "The Funchal" (instead of Manhattan, get it? :) 2 parts rye whiskey (e.g. Canadian Club) 1 part Full Rich Madeira wine bitters to taste cherry Can be served on the rocks (just combine all ingredients and stir) or shaken (combine whiskey, Madeira wine, bitters and ice in a shaker, shake well, strain into a glass and add a cherry) Definitely adjust the whiskey - Madeira wine proportions to suit your own tastes. Enjoy!!
