Portuguese beef stew, also known as "carne guisada" in Portuguese, is a hearty and flavorful stew that is typically made with beef, various vegetables, and seasonings.

The ingredients for Portuguese beef stew can vary depending on the region and personal preferences, but the most common ones include beef shank, potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage, chorizo, and white beans.

To make Portuguese beef stew, the beef is first seared to create a caramelized crust and then simmered with the vegetables and seasonings in a flavorful broth for several hours until the meat is tender and the vegetables are soft and infused with the rich flavors of the broth.

Portuguese beef stew is often served as a main dish and accompanied by rice or bread. It is a popular comfort food in Portugal, especially during the colder months, and is also enjoyed by many people around the world for its rich and satisfying flavor.

  2. Season the beef with 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and the black pepper.

  5. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Add the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  7. Add the tomatoes, water, bay leaf, crushed red pepper and remaining 3/4 teaspoon salt.
  8. Return the beef to the pan and bring the sauce to a boil.
  9. Reduce the heat to medium-low, partially covered and let the beef cook for 45 minutes.
  10. Add the potatoes and sweet potato and cook until they are easily pierced through with a fork (about 45 minutes)
  11. Add the parsley. Serve immediately.

We add just enough water to cover everything, we don't like it very brothy as it takes away from the taste, so just add as much as you like.
